Retirement planning isn’t a one-time event. It’s a series of decisions made over time, often with a lot riding on how those decisions fit together.
My role is to help clients understand their options, talk through the trade-offs, and make decisions they feel confident about.
What I’ve seen over the years is that most retirement mistakes don’t come from one bad decision. They tend to happen when good decisions are made in isolation. Withdrawals, taxes, investments, and long-term plans all interact, and when you look at them together, the outcomes tend to improve.
A big part of my work is slowing things down and focusing on what actually matters. Sometimes that’s answering a straightforward question. Other times it’s mapping out the next 20 or 30 years and stress-testing decisions before they’re made.
The most rewarding part is watching that shift to clarity when someone understands how things fit together and feels more settled about what comes next.
Early in my career, I kept noticing the same pattern. People were consistently saving, making thoughtful choices, and putting in the effort. But the decisions weren’t connected.
Investment withdrawals affect taxes. CPP timing changes income. One move often impacts several others. Most issues weren’t about effort, they were about coordination.
That realization shaped how I approach planning today. It also pushed me to spend more time educating and communicating.
Over the years, I’ve created a large library of retirement planning videos and resources aimed at helping Canadians better understand the decisions they’re facing and how those decisions work together.
Most of my time outside the office is spent with my wife, Melanie, and our three boys. I often joke that I have a second job as an evening Uber driver, usually taking the same three passengers to their next activity.
Hockey, golf, tennis, and now mostly watching my kids compete. I’ve always enjoyed the competition, discipline, and friendships that come with it.
Never something I really planned on doing, but it’s become one of the more rewarding parts of my life.
No plans, no agenda, just time with friends. I’m also fortunate to work alongside a few of my closest friends.
